Planning your ceremony should feel straightforward and stress-free. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive from couples.

Ceremony & Officiant

Do you personalize every ceremony?

Yes. Every ceremony is created specifically for each couple. We take the time to understand your story, your preferences, and the tone you want so the ceremony feels natural and meaningful.

Are your ceremonies non-denominational?

Yes. We specialize in non-denominational and civil ceremonies and work with couples of all backgrounds.

Can we include our own vows?

Absolutely. You can write your own vows, and we can help guide you if needed.

How long is the ceremony?

Most ceremonies are between 15–25 minutes, depending on your preferences and any custom elements included.

Marriage License Information

What Is a Marriage License?

A marriage license is a legal document that allows you to get married in New York State. After your ceremony, it is signed and submitted to officially record your marriage.

Marriage License vs. Marriage Certificate

The license allows you to get married. The certificate is the official document that confirms your marriage after the ceremony has been completed.

Who Can Perform a Ceremony?

Ceremonies must be performed by a legally recognized officiant such as a judge, justice, or ordained minister. NY Wedding Ministry provides qualified officiants who meet all legal requirements in New York State.

Age Requirements

. 18 and older: No parental consent required

. 16–17: Parental consent required

. 14–15: Parental consent + court approval required

Cost of a Marriage License

The cost is typically $40, though payment methods may vary by township.

What to Bring

Both parties must be present and provide identification.

Accepted documents include:

One of the following:

Birth certificate

Baptismal record

Naturalization record

Census record

AND one of the following:

Driver’s license

Passport

Employment ID

Immigration record

Is There a Waiting Period?

Yes. There is a 24-hour waiting period after receiving your license before your ceremony can take place.

The license is valid for 60 days.

Where do you apply?

You must apply in person at a town or city clerk’s office in New York State, typically where you or your partner reside.
